At Work
My internship at LGT, specifically within the IT Support Centre Services (ISCS) department, has been a truly enlightening journey. Under the expert guidance of Stefan Hobi, I embarked on an adventure in the realm of IT support. My responsibilities encompassed a diverse range of tasks, including second- level IT support, remote assistance, incident management, troubleshooting, and the meticulous handling of IT hardware lifecycle management. This multifaceted role not only honed my technical skills but also instilled in me the invaluable traits of adaptability and effective problem-solving.
One particularly endearing aspect of my daily routine was our 15:00 come together when the ISCS team would gather on the 3rd floor for a well-deserved coffee break. These pauses not only provided a brief relief but also allowed us to engage in spirited conversations and get to know each other on a more personal level. It was during these breaks that my colleagues, in their kind and welcoming manner, would suggest intriguing destinations for me to explore during my stay in Liechtenstein. On a lighter note, these breaks often turned into thrilling matches of table soccer, though I must admit that I am still mastering the art of the game. A particularly cherished tradition among the team was our Friday 9:00 ritual. This was the day when we eagerly made our way to the renowned restaurant Bendura to savor a local delight known as 'Fleischkäse.' Believe me when I say that this bread left an indelible mark on my taste buds, and it's safe to say that no one on my team ever missed an opportunity to savour this culinary delight.
One of the unique challenges I faced during my internship was the language barrier. The nuances of English often gave way to the more comfortable German, but I navigated this obstacle with humour, playfully telling my colleagues, "Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof," which translates to "I only understand train station." This humorous exchange helped bridge linguistic gaps and fostered a spirit of friendship within the team. Together, we shared countless moments of laughter and unforgettable experiences, often venturing to places and events that turned even routine days into exciting adventures.
Host Family
My time in Liechtenstein was greatly enriched by the welcoming embrace of the Novotny family— Claudia and Stefan being my host parents, and Lukas, Quirin and Ronja being my host siblings. Their open-hearted hospitality provided me with more than just accommodation; it created a sense of belonging that turned their house into a home away from home.
Our shared love for hiking allowed us to explore the breathtaking mountains and waterfalls of Liechtenstein. These journeys were not only visually stunning but also filled with knowledge exchanges, deepening my understanding of the region. On relaxed evenings, we gathered for lively card games of 'Schnautz,' punctuated by laughter and jokes shared by Claudia and Stefan. These moments forged lasting bonds and memories that will always hold a special place in my heart. The Novotny family's support and warmth made my Liechtenstein experience truly exceptional, and I am forever grateful.
highlights and challenges in liechtenstein
Liechtenstein and its neighboring regions of Switzerland offered an abundance of highlights, as well as a few challenges. The European way of life, with its rich culture and delicious cuisine, was a delightful adventure. As someone with a keen interest in technology, witnessing the blending of tradition and innovation in Switzerland was nothing short of awe-inspiring. It's a place where ancient castles stand in stark contrast to modern, cutting-edge technologies.
One unforgettable highlight was attending my line manager's wedding. The joy, happiness, and the love in the air left a lasting impression. It was an honor to be part of that special day, and I extend my best wishes to Andy and his newly wedded wife.
Despite the general sweetness of my life in Liechtenstein, there were challenges. The language barrier, mentioned earlier, was a constant reminder of the diverse international makeup of my workplace, but it was also a testament to the strength of our global community.
My Future Plans
As I look ahead, I can't help but recognize the profound impact my time at LGT has had on my career aspirations. Beyond the technical skills, the experience heightened my communication abilities and broadened my horizons. In the ever-evolving world of technology, I've come to understand that learning is an ongoing process. My future holds the promise of not just a career but a lifelong journey of growth and discovery.
Personal Message
I extend my deepest gratitude to LGT for believing in my potential and providing me with the opportunity to travel all the way from Namibia to embark on this internship journey. Stefan Hobi, my mentor, was not just an excellent guide but a cherished friend. His unwavering commitment to equipping me with knowledge is truly commendable.
