I am appreciative that the largest privately held bank in the world, LGT located in Liechtenstein, gave me the chance to work as an intern for three months in the department of technology and information.
I spent most of my time working at the service center in Bendern, where I was tasked with helping internal users with IT-related issues ranging from setting up computers to replacing or discarding peripheral devices.
I still remember my first day of work. Surprisingly, I was not anxious because my host father, Michael, had followed me. Paulus, another intern, and I were greeted with smiles, and everyone was friendly. On the first day of work Bernt Egel, one of my mentors gave me a tour of the company. This allowed me to meet new people and form new friendships. After the tour I was introduced to my coworkers with whom I had lunch - we immediately bonded. I will always be indebted to mentors such as Mirko, Stefan, Lukas, Andy, Roger, Daniel, Thomas, Sven, and the IT department for their willingness to help me. Their endless efforts enabled me to learn more about the IT industry and I got to develop both personally and professionally. In my opinion, LGT is a special company because of the family feel that the company embodies.
Host Family
I was lucky enough to have connected with two separate host families.
I am delighted to have Alessia and Michael as my parents since they treated me like their own child. I can still remember our first day, we met Sabina and our host parents at the airport in Zurich. It was a great occasion because it was the first, I got to meet Michael in person. We then had a very long drive back to Liechtenstein during which we got to know each other a little better. Alessia then greeted me and gave me a tour of my new home. My parents by my surprise were not too strict instead, they tried to give me as much freedom as they could. I was fortunate enough to have connected with my parents. Through Star Wars, my father Michael, and I became close, and I would say that I am now a fan. He shared a lot of advice with me on how to be a man and to see things differently. Most importantly, he was the first person to tell me how proud he was when I did my bungee jump in Verzasca. Alessia is so hilarious and vibrant that she felt the need to protect me. Her birthday will always be special because I got to meet my Liechtensteiner family.
The Biedermann’s my Ruggellen family are so kind, welcoming, and funny. Mee Helga and Peter are very considerate people they would invite me over for dinner, I enjoyed my time in Ruggell. We got to exchange a lot of cultural values and experiences, for instance, I was able to teach several words in my native language. Surprisingly, Mee Helga has extremely good clicks. It was always a pleasure being around her because she is funny, caring, and protective, and Peter is a good singer I remember there was this one-time during dinner we got to sing "Yesterday by the Beatles" together. I would consider that as a key bonding moment. It was also a blessing to have met sister Judith, even though it was just for a brief time I felt like I had known her my entire life. Sister Judith treated me like I was her little brother, she is truly unique and special and I am grateful and thankful for the time and the moments we shared together as a family. The fact that both families loved me without condition, offered me guidance, and taught me life lessons made my time with them worthwhile. Therefore, I would like to say Danke vielmal Mama Alessia, Vater Michael und Mee Helga und Sister Judith und Peter "Bubo".
Highlights and Challenges in liechtenstein
I got to learn and meet new people, it was exciting that I got to push myself beyond my limits and take a leap of faith by bungee jumping and most of I have a family in Liechtenstein, and I am grateful to have met and built a family relationship amongst the other interns.
My biggest challenge was that I thought saying no to people was rude which resulted in me comprising myself and my mental state, furthermore, adopting to a new environment can be difficult especially if it’s your 1st time being abroad.
My Future Plans
I envision myself graduating with an honor in computing and being a part of a group of people or a company, which develops and creates tools that can address real problems that users encounter daily in the near future. I also hope to travel more, learn more, and take in as much as I can because the world is an interesting place once you start to see it from different perspectives.
Personal Message
I want to thank everyone who was involved in making this possible, for their ongoing support and work. I also want to thank B360 for providing students with the chance to learn from industry leading companies. Without this exposure, I would never have developed and learned all the things I got to learn or do therefore I would like to say again danke vielmal.
