At work
Working at Swiss Quality Testing Services (SQTS) for the past 3 months (1st August to 31st October) has been a learning and yet exciting journey for me. I still feel honored to have had the opportunity to work at a company that is on top of its game, well organized and filled with a supportive and understanding team. The work I did at SQTS opened my eyes to career options I never considered in my life such as Molecular biology.
I had the privilege to work in the Microbiology and Molecular biology laboratories. I started off working in the Microbiology laboratory where samples are prepared and microbial analysis conducted on microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenesis and Bacillus cereus just to mention a few. The purpose of conducting this analysis is to ensure the safety and quality for all food products. In addition, SQTS adapted a procedure known as PCR to quickly detect Listeria monocytogenesis compared to the longer method that is used, which turned out to be a success and I am glad to have been part of the development. Before I started working in the molecular biology I went to Palezieux to carry out a food audit at a bakery, where I learned additional tips on how to conduct successful food audit in big industries. I also had the chance to work in the molecular biology where I came to learn about DNA extraction in food. DNA extraction is done in order to confirm the legitimacy of food products and ensure that food is safe for consumption. All in all, with the knowledge I have gained, I am positive that I will make use of it back home.
My Swiss host family
I was placed in a wonderful family in which my host mother, Christine Maurer Fankhauser and her children were very receiving. With her we got to visit Bern, the Tierpark zoo, Aare, festivals and take part in activities such as mini golf and hiking to mention a few. She really made us feel part of the family and made my stay in Switzerland the best experience. In spite of her busy schedule she made time for one of the interns (Modesta Amulungu) and I to experience the culture and beauty of Switzerland. We did various activities such as exploring Bern, going to the Tierpark, mini golf, hiking and trying out Swiss cuisine which ranged from Raclette to Swiss cheese. Dinner time with the family was my favorite part of the day, as we indulge ourselves over nice food and bonded. My experience with Swiss food led me to an idea of writing a cook book one day. I am so grateful to have met a family that represent love and care and for opening up their home and hearts to me and making my stay the most memorable time of my life.
Highlights and challenges in Switzerland
The biggest challenge that I experienced was language barrier as my colleagues could not speak English and I was expected to learn from them. However, it easily turned into a strong point due to my interest in learning French. I did not allow it to limit me, because the eagerness to learn the language continued to grow as I picked up a couple of words. This has taught me that it is up to you if you really want something in life, because sitting around sobbing will never get the job done. Another challenge I faced was the use of advanced machinery, such as the PCR and the UV radiation. I found it really difficult to operate these machines as the instructions were all in French, which made me dependent on my colleagues most of the times. I did not pay much attention to it as it was part of the learning process, however, I always practiced on how to operate them. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect!
The highlights of my stay were the birthday surprise party I got from work as well as the birthday lunch my host family prepared for me. I loved all of the wonderful places I got to see like Lucerne, Thun, and the boat rides in Brienz and Basel and so on. In addition, I enjoyed touring Milan, Italy and finally seeing the gothic appearance of the Duomo. Other highlight is the day spent in Germany at Europa Park where I got to go on all the roller coaster rides (the silver star was epic!) and this have made me get over my fears for heights.
My future plans
I’m very passionate about food safety and public health. Thus, I plan on pursuing a Master’s degree in either Epidemiology or Food science as well as open up a well-established restaurant one day. Last but not least, I also plan on launching a campaign that will help provide the basic necessities for disadvantaged school children. I leave all of this in God’s hands.
Personal Message
I would like to extend my profound gratitude to SQTS and B360 for this eye opening opportunity and to never stop what they are doing in helping an African child make their dream a reality and to be the change their country needs.
Therefore I leave you with this quote by Lukas M.M “No matter what trials and tribulations, you faces in life never let it determine what is ahead of you, trust God and the process because it is what makes us grow at the end of the day”.
