Students who are appointed to do an internship in a Swiss institution are given an opportunity to refine their skills in MS-Office applications, especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
I conducted a three-week refresher course in ICT with the trainees. Using a survey tool with a few dozen self-assessments, we created a skill profile for each candidate.
Based on these results we negotiated for each participant a tailor-made training programme. The learners accordingly worked through the learning materials on the website “ICT Training4Students”. For much of the time they studied in a self-directed manner on the appropriate level of challenge.
I was able to support the learning group in recurring ZOOM sessions. In these meetings we could prepare the self-learning phases together, correct misunderstandings and motivate. I was able to follow the learning progress in this way.
In addition to self-correcting exercises, learners were required to complete and submit Tutor Marked Assignments on a regular basis. This gave me a good idea of what was understood by the participants and where there were still gaps in understanding. For each piece of work submitted, the learners received detailed feedback, with confirmations of what had been solved correctly and hints as to what could be solved more elegantly.
In individual ZOOM meetings we could discuss this work in detail and answer questions. Thanks to this communication, I was able to see for myself that the participants were able to make very great progress. To my delight, I was able to rate the performances as very good throughout.
A written survey showed that the course was also considered very productive from the learners' point of view. Learners confirmed that they were happy to access the learning resources even after completing the course.
