My name is Hileni Kativa, and I am a final-year student pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health Sciences at the Namibia University of Science and Technology. From September 1 to November 30, I had the privilege of working as a Laboratory Assistant intern at Zweifel Chips and Snacks AG in Switzerland. This opportunity was made possible by B360 Education Partnerships in collaboration with the Namibia University of Science and Technology. This report provides a comprehensive overview of my experiences during the internship.

At work

Working with a dynamic team in the Quality Assurance and Development Department at Zweifel Chips and Snacks, a renowned company producing high-quality chips for over 60 years, was a self-enriching, life-changing, and exciting experience. During my three-month internship, I was assigned to the Quality Assurance and Development team and worked in the laboratory, where I analyzed water, salt, and fat content in chips and snacks. I also assisted with sample preparation for acrylamide testing in chips and sugar testing in raw potatoes. Additionally, I conducted packaging control and analyzed the quality of frying oil, as well as performed quality control on incoming raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products.

I contributed to production development and participated in projects aimed at improving the performance of frying lines. My mentor and colleagues ensured I was exposed to all aspects of food safety and provided a supportive, friendly, and helpful work environment.

Moreover, I spent one week at Biolytix AG, an analytical laboratory based in Basel and a close stakeholder of Zweifel Chips and Snacks, where samples are sent for external analysis. During my time at Biolytix, I was introduced to various laboratories, including allergens, microbiology, molecular biology, gene expression, and genotyping.

Working in a healthy and professional environment allowed me to develop essential skills such as effective communication, teamwork, time management, attention to detail, and problem-solving. This internship opportunity has had a profoundly positive impact on my career development.

My Swiss host family

Living with a Swiss host family was a truly beautiful and enriching experience. I stayed with the Mathis family for most of my time and spent one week in October with the Müller Wepfer family. The Mathis family welcomed me with open arms and made me feel completely at home. They introduced me to Swiss culture, allowing me to try traditional Swiss dishes such as fondue, raclette, and rösti. To my surprise, I enjoyed and loved these meals.

Dinner time was always special, as we shared stories about our day and played games together afterwards. Although I lost most of the time, I appreciated learning new games and enjoying the lighthearted moments. We went ice skating at Dolder Sports and when it snowed we went sledding at the hill, experiences I will always treasure as they allowed me to bond closely with the family. I am incredibly grateful to them for making my integration into Swiss culture so seamless and welcoming.

The Müller Wepfer family was equally warm and kind during my stay. Our evenings together were also memorable, often filled with fun games after dinner. I truly enjoyed my time with them and am thankful for their hospitality.

Highlights and challenges in Switzerland

The highlights of my stay in Switzerland included experiencing snow for the very first time at Engelberg. Growing up, I had only seen snow on television while watching cartoons, but finally being able to touch and play with it was magical. Another unforgettable moment was visiting Paris, France who would have thought I would one day see the Eiffel Tower in person? Standing in front of the iconic Eiffel Tower was something I never imagined I would do. Travelling by train and tram to explore Switzerland was also an exciting adventure. I had the privilege of visiting beautiful places like Lucerne, Rapperswil, Bellinzona and Basel. I also had the pleasure of trying authentic Swiss cuisine, which added to the richness of my adventure.

Of course, no journey is without its challenges. Adapting to a new culture and work environment was demanding, but these experiences pushed me to grow and develop in ways I had not anticipated.

My future plans

I am excited to return to Namibia and apply the knowledge I have gained to make a positive impact. I am also looking forward to graduating next year while actively searching for employment opportunities. Additionally, I plan to seek funding to pursue a degree in Food Technology, further advancing my education and career aspirations.
